How To Bet On Boxing

It can be easy to get overwhelmed by boxing with the many different weight classes and governing bodies but the sport itself has remained largely unchanged for years. The trick will likely be finding good value to bet on with some boxers having little competition in their own weight division.

But if you’re ready to get betting on boxing, here are a few basic bets that you need to know about.

The simplest form of betting on boxing is moneyline. You just pick who is going to win the fight and place your bet. Of course, how much a winning bet will pay you differs based on the betting line itself.

For example, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin was a -160 favorite in his first fight vs Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. That means that you would need to wager $160 on Golovkin to win in order to make $100. However, Alvarez was a +130 underdog, which means you would win $130 on a $100 bet on Alvarez. A more in-depth explanation of moneyline betting can be found here.

Method Of Victory

Another popular wager among UFC bettors is the method of victory prop. This is like taking the moneyline one step further by predicting how a fighter will win a bout.

For example, Golovkin was a -160 favorite to beat Alvarez but Golovkin to win via knockout was +160. If Golovkin were to knock out Alvarez, the Golovkin-to-win bet at -160 would still be a winner but so too would Golovkin to win by knockout at +160. That simply means you would make more money if you were to correctly predict how Golovkin would win rather than just picking him to win outright.

Total Rounds

This bet sees a bettor predicting if a fight will go OVER or UNDER a certain length of time that is set by the sportsbook.

For example, the total rounds for Golovkin vs Alvarez could be set at 11.0 (-145/+105). That means that if the fight ended at any time before the start of the 11th round, then the UNDER would win for bettors. If the fight were to start the 11th round, then the OVER would be the winning bet. You can find a more comprehensive look at totals betting here.

Other Types Of Boxing Bets

There are a few more options available to bettors who are looking to increase a potential payout but they do come with an increased risk.

Round Betting

Another evolution of the moneyline bet – you are not just betting a certain fighter to win but you are betting that fighter to win in a certain round. Though difficult to predict, it also offers much bigger potential winnings for a bettor.

For example, you could bet Golovkin to win at -160 or you could bet Golovkin to win within rounds 9-12 at +450.

On Points Betting

A fighter winning “on points” is something you will come across betting on boxing. It simply means that you are picking a boxer to win the fight by decision. The “points” refers to the points judges award for each round.

Basic Strategies and Tips
  • Use a reliable and trustworthy sportsbook. See above for a few recommendations.
  • Do your research on the fighters and the betting lines.
  • Limit your risk by not wagering beyond your means.
