If starting pitching is the most important piece of baseball betting data, then umpire data is close behind. The man behind the plate has tendencies in calling a game, just like pitchers and hitters do. When you log their games as a home plate umpire, you get to see some stats. One ump has a big strike zone and there are more strikeouts. Often, the corresponding stat is more UNDER wagers. Other umps have a small strike zone, leading to more hittable pitches and more walks – more baserunners can translate to more runs and more OVERs. Some umpires appear to favor home teams (while this is a fallacy, the trends remain). So check out the umpire stats here at OddsShark and make it part of your daily handicapping regime in baseball season.
