World Cup Greece Preview

Greece is in a tough group, but they also have one of the best defenses in the World Cup so they have a solid shot to make it out of their group if they can score some goals.

Greece is in Group B along with powerhouse Argentina, Nigeria, and South Korea.
Bovada has Greece at +12500 to win the World Cup and at +500 to win Group B.

Greece is in a tough group, but they have a little bit of an edge considering they will be facing Nigeria and Argentina and those teams have great offenses, but weak defenses. Greece may be able to get the upper hand if they can play good defense and take advantage of counter-attack chances. They will be the favorite against South Korea, but they are not a pushover being the best team from Asia.

Greece was a major surprise winner of the 2004 European Championships, but this is only their second World Cup appearance (1994).

Greece was lucky to get drawn into a pretty easy qualifying group, but they still only finished second to Switzerland. However, they played great defense in beating Ukraine in a playoff to qualify for South Africa.

The Greeks are definitely not the most exciting teams to watch, but they have a great defense that can thwart even the best of offenses. Defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos of Liverpool is the only player on the squad that is playing in a top-tier league. He is the anchor of the defense and rarely gets beat to the ball.

Giorgos Karagounis of Panathinaikos leads a decent midfield and he will be counted on to set up some scoring opportunities, especially on the counter-attack.

The major weakness of the Greek squad is that they do not play creative soccer and they do not have an offense that will instill fear in any team’s defense. One of their main ways to score is off set pieces.

This World Cup will likely be German head coach Otto Rehhagel’s last hurrah and he is known for taking less than favorite teams and doing the most with them. He plays a defensive style and tends not to send his players forward unless they are on the counter-attack.

If they beat South Korea, which they should, the will have to beat either Nigeria or Argentina to make it out of the group. Beating Argentina is far from easy, so the match against Nigeria is key.

Defense is key for Greece, but they will have to score somehow.
